Is it cheaper to roam or buy a travel eSIM?

If your plan already includes roaming with enough data, roaming is cheaper: it costs nothing extra. If you'd pay by the day, a destination eSIM usually wins. Ten days in Europe at a gigabyte a day is $28 on a travel eSIM, against $100 on Visible's base plan, and the eSIM is cheaper at every trip length here.
Mint's passes are the exception worth knowing: on 4 of the 5 trip lengths here they cost less than the Europe eSIM, and they keep your own number working. The table shows exactly where. US Mobile's $15 monthly add-on carries 1 GB, and its 5 GB tier is $30, so neither covers a gigabyte a day for long.

An underlined carrier figure costs less than the Europe eSIM for the same trip and states enough data to compare. Carrier roaming keeps your own number, so two-factor texts and calls still reach you; an eSIM gives you data only unless it says otherwise. US Mobile's add-on is 1 GB for $15 or 5 GB for $30, and its reach depends on which US Mobile network your line is on. Where an included allowance runs short, the cheapest fix is often a small eSIM for the remainder rather than paying the carrier's overage, though it means switching data lines mid-trip.
How to choose
- Your plan includes roaming and the data covers the trip: use it. Nothing to buy, and your number works.
- You'd pay by the day: price a destination eSIM first. For a week or more it's usually far cheaper.
- You need a local number: neither option here gives you one; look for an eSIM or local SIM sold with a number.
- Check your phone is unlocked before counting on an eSIM from another provider. Each carrier's unlocking rules.
