Most big-carrier plans include Mexico and Canada, and several budget plans do too, but it depends on the plan, not just the carrier. Visible’s base plan charges $5 a day there, Cricket covers them on some plans and not on Sensible or Select, and Spectrum’s base plan includes calling to Mexico and Canada from the US but no use of your phone while you’re there. What about Tello and US Mobile?

I haven’t read their Mexico and Canada terms closely enough to put them in the table, so they’re left out rather than guessed. US Mobile includes roaming on Unlimited Premium (20 GB) and Unlimited Starter paid yearly (1 GB), with reach that depends on which of its networks your line is on (the US Mobile roaming page). Check the carrier’s own page for Mexico and Canada before you cross.

What should you check before crossing the border?

  • The plan, not the carrier. On Visible, Cricket and Spectrum the answer changes between the base plan and the next one up.
  • The data allowance. “Included” often means a set amount of high-speed data, then slower speeds: 15 GB on T-Mobile Experience More, 10 GB from Total’s roaming allotment, 10 GB a month on Xfinity.
  • Calling to versus using your phone in. Several plans include calls from the US to Mexico and Canada. That’s a different thing from your phone working there. Verizon’s plan page uses its “Mexico & Canada talk, text & data” heading for the calling, and its travel FAQ separately says use in both countries is included with all Unlimited plans.
  • How long you’re staying. Carriers generally treat roaming as for travel, not for living abroad; Total’s footnote says it’s “not for extended international use.”

Does Visible work in Mexico and Canada?

Yes. Visible+ and Visible+ Pro include Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. On the base Visible plan it's a separate pass at $5 a day.

Does Cricket work in Mexico and Canada?

On Smart Unlimited, Supreme Unlimited and its 3-month and 12-month plans. Cricket's labels list usage in Mexico and Canada as unavailable on Sensible 10GB and Select Unlimited.

Does Spectrum Mobile work in Mexico and Canada?

Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Plus Premium include talk, text and data in 215+ countries. The base Unlimited plan includes 2,000 minutes a month of calling to Canada and Mexico from the US, which isn't the same as using your phone there.
