Spectrum Mobile's first line is free or discounted for a year, then $30 more, and only while you keep the internet

Spectrum Mobile can’t be bought without Spectrum Internet and Auto Pay. For new customers the first line is $0 a month for a year on Unlimited, $10 on Unlimited Plus and $20 on Unlimited Plus Premium, then $30, $40 and $50, before tax. Every tier jumps by exactly $30.

Spectrum Mobile and Xfinity Mobile are close to the same product sold by two cable companies. Both run on Verizon. Both give you the first line free for a year on their base plan. Both charge exactly $30 a month more once that year ends. Neither will sell you the phone service at all unless you also buy their internet.

I’m not a Spectrum customer. What follows is their plan page read the way you’d read a lease, on September 22, 2026.

Can you get Spectrum Mobile without Spectrum Internet?

Before any number matters, this one does:

Spectrum Mobile is available exclusively to Spectrum Internet customers, so you’ll need to sign up for an Internet plan before you get mobile service.

And in the offer details: Spectrum Internet and Auto Pay required for Mobile service.

Xfinity Mobile works the same way: its page says the service is “exclusively available to Xfinity Internet members.” Neither company publishes a price for the phone line on its own. The phone service isn’t discounted by the bundle, it is the bundle.

That changes what “switching carriers” means here. On Mint or US Mobile you’re comparing two phone bills. On Spectrum you’re comparing a phone bill against a decision about your home internet, and the honest version of that comparison includes what the internet costs after its own promotional rate ends.

What does Spectrum Mobile cost after the free year?

Additional lines are the full price from day one: $30, $40 or $50 each. The introductory offer applies to the first line only.

Look at the middle two columns. The discount is $30 on every tier. Not a percentage, not a tier-dependent sweetener, a flat $30 knocked off one line for twelve months. Xfinity does the same thing at the same size. Two companies, same network, same offer shape, same number.

That is what a bundle discount looks like when the product being discounted isn’t really the product being sold.

What isn’t in the headline?

“Standard rates apply after promo period or service change.”

Three words of that sentence are doing the work: or service change. Read literally, the twelve months aren’t the only thing that ends the promotional rate; changing your service ends it too. If you’re planning to switch tiers during the first year, ask Spectrum in writing whether the intro price survives it before you do.

Also not in the headline: an activation fee, and taxes, neither quantified on the plan page. Every price above is before both.

What does Spectrum Mobile do well?

Two things on this page are better than the pricing deserves.

Roaming. Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Plus Premium include talk, text and data in 215+ countries, slowed after 10 GB and 20 GB. That is a real allowance rather than a token one, and on a two-week trip 10 GB is about 0.7 GB a day, which is a working phone rather than a maps-only phone. It puts Spectrum alongside the other plans on this site that include roaming, among them Xfinity, T-Mobile’s Experience plans, Total Wireless’s MAX 5G and US Mobile’s Unlimited Premium, and it’s the reason the roaming comparison is worth checking before you assume the cheapest plan wins.

The base Unlimited plan has none of this. It includes 2,000 minutes a month to Canada and Mexico and stops there. If international travel is why you’d stay, the plan that provides it is $40 a month, not $30.

Hotspot on the top tier. 50 GB of high-speed hotspot on Unlimited Plus Premium is a real allowance if you tether, though several postpaid plans offer more at a higher price.

What does it mean if you’re leaving?

The $30 line and the $30 cliff are the same $30, which makes the arithmetic unusually simple: whatever Spectrum Mobile has cost you so far, from month 13 it costs $30 a month more, per line, plus tax.

Three things to check before you compare that against anything:

1. What your internet costs without the mobile line. Spectrum’s mobile plan page doesn’t mention any internet discount for having mobile, so it should be unchanged, but it’s worth confirming on your own bill rather than taking from a plan page.
2. Whether your internet is still on its own promotional rate. Cable internet has the same twelve-month shape. Two cliffs arriving in the same quarter is a worse surprise than either alone.
3. Whether you’re using the roaming. It’s the strongest reason to stay, and it only exists on Plus and above.

Then put the resulting number into the switch calculator, which prices every budget carrier at its regular rate rather than its first-year rate. Because Spectrum runs on Verizon, the carriers that keep the same coverage are Visible, Total Wireless and US Mobile’s Warp network, and all three will sell you a line without asking what your home internet is.

The price cliff table has all three Spectrum plans in it, alongside Xfinity’s, tied at the top. Its figures run higher than the ones here because it adds an estimated tax to prices that exclude it, so every carrier is compared on the same basis.
