Verizon abroad: TravelPass is $12 a day, and from nine days the $100 monthly plan costs less

Verizon TravelPass costs $12 for each day you use your phone abroad, with 5 GB of high-speed data per day and 3G speeds after that. For a trip of nine days or longer, Verizon’s $100 International Monthly Plan costs less. Unlimited Ultimate includes roaming outright, and Verizon says every Unlimited plan includes Mexico and Canada. How does TravelPass charge?

From Verizon’s TravelPass FAQ:

• A 24-hour TravelPass session “starts automatically when you use your device in a TravelPass country.”
• “You’re only charged on days you use your device in a TravelPass country.” A day with the phone in airplane mode costs nothing.
• $12 a day in most TravelPass countries, $6 a day in Mexico and Canada.
• Each session includes 5 GB of high-speed data, then “unlimited data at 3G speeds for the remainder of your TravelPass session.” Another 2 GB in the same session is $10, or $5 in Mexico and Canada.

TravelPass uses your own plan’s talk and text, so your number keeps working for calls, texts and two-factor codes.

When is the $100 monthly plan cheaper?

Verizon’s international travel FAQ describes a $100 International Monthly Plan as “ideal for trips for 9 days or longer,” with 20 GB of high-speed data, unlimited texts and 250 minutes. The arithmetic agrees:

Eight TravelPass days are $96, under the monthly plan. Nine are $108, over it. The monthly plan also carries more data in total than a short run of TravelPass days, but less per day: 20 GB across a month against 5 GB each TravelPass day. For a heavy-data week, TravelPass gives you more; for a long, lighter trip, the monthly plan is the one to buy.

Which Verizon plans include roaming?

From Verizon’s myPlan page:

• Unlimited Ultimate includes “unlimited international data, talk and text” in 210+ countries: 15 GB of high-speed data, then 1.5 Mbps. Verizon’s FAQ says TravelPass can’t be added to it because it already includes this.
• Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus include talk, text and high-speed data “when traveling in Mexico & Canada,” slowed to 3G after 2 GB a day. Everywhere else, TravelPass is added to the line automatically and charged by the day.

On Mexico and Canada, Verizon’s international travel FAQ says: “Unlimited data, talk and text in Canada and Mexico are Included with all Unlimited and other select plans.” The $6 TravelPass rate there is for plans that don’t include them. Verizon’s Simplicity plan page uses the same “Mexico & Canada talk, text & data” heading for calling those countries from the US, which is a separate benefit.

How does that compare?

Ten days at $120 compares with $20 for Mint’s ten-day pass and $100 on Visible’s base plan, and it’s the same as AT&T’s Day Pass; the roaming comparison has every carrier side by side. Several cheaper carriers on Verizon’s own network include roaming: Total Wireless’s MAX 5G plans include a 10 GB roaming allotment in 140+ countries, and Visible+ and Visible+ Pro include Global Pass days. Whether the network is worth leaving for is a different question, and the Verizon network page ranks every plan on it at its regular price.

What to check before flying

• Which plan you’re on. Ultimate includes roaming; Welcome and Plus charge by the day outside Mexico and Canada.
• How long the trip is. From nine days, add the monthly plan before you leave rather than paying day by day.
• Whether any single day will go past 5 GB. That’s when the $10 top-up, or the 3G slowdown, applies.
